The 19/20 Saudi Pro League season kicked-off in August of last year with new ambitions and high expectations. Despite the unprecedented situation the world faced in the last few months, the league exceeded expectations and produced many moments that will live on in fans’ memories for many years to come.
With 8 rounds and 64 matches remaining to determine the fates of the 16 competing teams, we decided to look back at the standout images that shaped the season so far.

The 19/20 season officially launches as the Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Professionals League Cup in honour of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman during a glamourous ceremony on August 18th in which Minister of Sports Prince Abdulaziz Bin Turki Alfaisal announced a historic clubs funding strategy worth SAR 1.6bn.

Al Nassr’s Brazilian midfielder Giuliano celebrates as he gets the season off the mark by scoring the first goal during the season’s opener against newly promoted Damac on August 22nd.



Fans across the league join in the nationwide celebration marking the Kingdom’s 89th national day on September 23rd during matchday 4.

Al Hilal host Al Nassr in a thrilling Riyadh derby which saw the yellow side of the capital claim a 2-1 win on October 27th courtesy of Abderrazak Hamdallah’s 73rd minute winner.



Al Fateh and Al Adalah battle it out on October 18th in one of the most thrilling encounters which ended in a 5-3 win for Al Fateh, marking a successful first match for Yanick Ferreira as head coach.


Syrian goalscorer Omar Al Somah celebrates an incredible freekick with his first touch of a ball against Al Tawwoun on October 18th. The strike was later voted by the fans as the best goal of the first half of the season.



Al Ahli and Saudi Arabian national team midfielder Abdelfattah Assiri opens the scoring in the Jeddah derby against Al Ittihad in front of over 23,000 fans at the King Abdullah Sport City stadium on October 31st.



Chilean talisman Rony Fernandes claims the match ball after scoring the 19/20 campaign’s first hattrick by leading Al Fayha to a convincing 4-1 win over Al Ittihad on December 19th.
 

History is made as Abha and Damac compete in the Aseer derby on December 28th for the first time Saudi’s top-flight football division since both clubs’ foundation in 1966 and 1972, respectively.

The SPL launches #OurLeague campaign to celebrate a record-breaking first half of the season which welcomed over 1 million fans.
 

Al Hilal and Saudi Arabian national team goalkeeper Abdullah Al Maiouf steps up to score a penalty in the 95th minute on February 5th just minutes after saving a penalty on the other end to seal a 3-1 victory over Al Raed. 

Al Faisaly’s goalkeeper scores a miraculous header in the dying minutes of the match to snatch a 2-2 draw with Al Fateh on February 15th.
 

The SPL celebrates the upcoming G20 summit hosted by Saudi Arabia later this year by renaming matchday 20 to the Youth’s 20 to promote the influential G20’s young leaders’ international diplomatic forum.






Al Ittihad celebrates their win against Al Shabab in the season’s final match with fans in attendance on February 29th. The following two rounds before the halt were played behind closed doors due to Covid-19 health and safety concerns.





Al Taawoum line-up on March 7th ahead of the first match without the presence of fans following the decision to play matches behind closed doors until the remainder of the football campaign.


 

Al Faisaly’s Mohammed Al-Saiari celebrates his 68th minute equaliser against Al Hazm on March 13th which turned out to be the last goal scored before the 5 months pause due to Covid-19.
 

Following over 3 months of absence, SPL clubs around the Kingdom resume training on June 21st in preparation for the season’s restart at the beginning of August.
